The Pulmonary Special Procedures UnitThe UCSD Pulmonary Special Procedures Unit at Hillcrest is one of the most active Pulmonary Procedure Centers in the country. Services provided include a variety of diagnostic and therapeutic interventions and consultation for all aspects of pulmonary and pleural disease. All procedures are performed under the direction of the pulmonary faculty physicians. The unit is headed by Dr. James Harrell II, and has a dedicated nursing and secretarial staff. WE ARE DISEASE SPECIALISTS: We diagnose and treat a full continuum of diseases that affect the airways of the lungs.WE ARE PATIENT CARE SPECIALISTS: We evaluate and provide treatment options for an extensive array of conditions, we are airway management specialists.WE ARE PROCEDURE SPECIALISTS: We perform a wide range of Invasive Pulmonary interventions including: Flexible bronchoscopy, rigid bronchoscopy, Nd:Yag laser applications, airway stent placement, transthoracic needle aspiration, endobronchial radiation therapy (brachy therapy), transtracheal catheter placement, percutaneous tracheostomies, large volume pulmonary lavage, thoracoscopy, chest tube insertion and management, thoracentesis, pleural biopsies, and in collaboration with our cardiothoracic surgery department, lung volume reduction surgery.
