Lisa Shives, MD, is a board certified sleep medicine doctor. She has extensive clinical experience in the treatment of all sleep related disorders including sleep apnea, insomnia, narcolepsy, restless legs syndrome and circadian rhythm disorders.

Dr. Shives clinical focus includes investigating the effects that diet and exercise exert on
sleep as well as the metabolic and cardiovascular abnormalities associated with sleep disorders. She has a special interest in alternative therapies for sleep apnea, obesity hypoventilation syndrome, nocturnal eating syndrome, and finding new strategies for increasing CPAP tolerance.

Prior to taking on the role as clinical director of the Sleep Medicine Center at UC San Diego Health System, Dr. Shives served nearly ten years as the CEO and medical director of a comprehensive sleep center affiliated with Northshore University Health Systems in Chicago.

As a board member of the National Sleep Foundation, Dr. Shives has led several nationwide programs in patient education and health advocacy. She is a former spokesperson for the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, and for nearly two years was the weekly sleep medicine contributor for the CNN Health Blog.

Dr Shives earned her medical degree and completed her fellowship training in both medical ethics and sleep medicine at the University of Chicago. She completed her residency in internal medicine at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL and her internship at Yale University in New Haven, CT. Dr. Shives is triple board certified in sleep medicine, obesity medicine, and internal medicine.

Dr. Shives is a founding member of the Society of Anesthesia and Sleep Medicine. At present, she is an active member of several professional societies including the Obesity Society, British Sleep Society and the American Society for Nutrition.
