The Pulmonary and Critical Care Training Program of The University of California, San Diego, is designed to provide trainees with an experience that will optimally prepare them for careers in academic medicine.

Our program is designed to allow the trainee to gain experience in research, patient care and teaching.  The hallmark of the program is that it is tailored to each trainee; the trainee defines his/her areas of greatest interest and talents.  The breadth of our faculty and facilities assures that trainees can shape their career development in the directions that best meet their individual talents.  The unique blend of activities available at UCSD - in basic research, clinical research, and care of patients with a variety of acute and chronic respiratory disorders - facilitates substantial flexibility for trainee choices.  Our trainees emerge from the program with the fundamental clinical skills needed for careers in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, but the program places special emphasis on the development of skills in basic and/or clinical research as an essential element for a fruitful academic career.

Our trainees have consistently received consideration for faculty positions at institutions throughout the United States, and over 50% of our graduates have accepted such positions.

Our careful follow-up of all prior trainees indicates that the research and clinical training at UCSD has well prepared them for their ultimate career choices.  This is an established record of which our training faculty is proud.  We believe it reflects the ability of trainees to explore the rich mixture of opportunities available to them and pursue the areas within Pulmonary and Critical Care which best fit their talents and interests.
