Application Process

The Program is designed to accomplish its objective during a three-year training period. While three years is considered the minimum period required for adequate research and clinical preparation for an academic career, extensions to a fourth year or beyond are common.

At present, four trainees are accepted at the first, second and third year level with guaranteed Program support for this period. Extensions to a fourth year or beyond are requested by the trainee and reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Applicants to the Fellowship Program are expected to be graduates of medical schools in the United States who have completed three or more years of post- doctoral training prior to Fellowship. (Ordinarily, three years of residency are the minimum required, but uniquely qualified individuals may be accepted after two years). Foreign medical school graduates with ECFMG, VQE, or Flex certificates may be considered if they hold permanent immigrant status.

Unfortunately, we are rarely able to accept individuals who do not hold permanent immigrant status. Documentation of visa status is essential. California medical licensure is not required at the time of acceptance, but must be obtained thereafter.  Licensure must be valid by June 1 or you will not be allowed to start the program.

Applications for the Program are being accepted through ERAS.  The application process begins in December and closes by February 28. Interview process may begin as early as January and continues through April. Interview dates are typically held on Thursday.

Review of applications is completed by faculty in May in order to submit applications for ranking. The Match takes place in June and applicants are formally notified within one to two weeks.
