Application Process

At present, five trainees are accepted annually, with guaranteed program support for three years. Extensions to a fourth year or beyond are encouraged, and accommodations will be made to suit individual goals. Applicants to the Fellowship Program are expected to be graduates of medical schools in the United States who have completed three or more years of postdoctoral training prior to Fellowship. (Ordinarily, three years of residency are the minimum required, but uniquely qualified individuals may be accepted after two years). Foreign medical school graduates with ECFMG, VQE, or Flex certificates may be considered if under permanent resident status. We do not generally accept applicants with H1-B or J1 visa status because these trainees not supported by our NIH training grant. However, please submit your application if you feel it is exceptional. Documentation of visa status is essential.

California medical licensure is not required at the time of acceptance, but must be obtained thereafter.  Licensure must be valid by June 1 to enter the program on July 1.

Applications for the program are accepted through ERAS. The application process begins in December and closes on February 19, 2010.

The program recognizes that ERAS supplies a relatively complete application, but the following information must be received by the program in order for your application to be considered complete.

  • A recent photograph
  • CV
  • Personal Statement
  • ERAS Application
  • ECFMG must accompany ERAS application if foreign graduate
  • MSPE (Dean's Letter from Medical School)
  • Copy of USMLE
  • A minimum of two letters of support. One must be from Residency Program Director in your current institution.
