Advanced Lung Disease Program

The Advanced Lung Disease Program (ALDP)is the result of several programs combining into one in order to assure maximal patient care and management. Developed in 2003, ALDP is the marriage of the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program and the Lung Transplant Program.

ALDP is the umbrella which has expanded to include the following:

  • COPD
  • Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis
  • Interstitial Lung Disease
  • Lung Volume Reduction
  • Pulmonary Rehabilitation
  • Lung Transplant

The Lung Transplant Program was begun in 1989 under the direction of Dr. Stewart Jamieson and in collaboration with Dr. Kenneth Moser, then director of the Pulmonary Vascular Center. The Lung Transplant Program began in 1989 and has since grown to become the best and busiest lung transplant center in California.

As of April 2004, UCSD had performed 266 lung transplant procedures with results that lead the field. In 2005, UCSD has performed 17 lung transplants to date.

The ALDP is now under the direction of Dr. Gordon Yung, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, and includes two transplant nurse coordinators and a transplant social worker.
