We are committed to enhancing racial and gender diversity within the PCCSMP division and the PCCM fellowship program. We aspire to increase the number of underrepresented physicians and empower them to become future academic leaders.
PCCSM Committee on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion
This committee, currently chaired by Dr. Angela Wang and Dr. Chantal Darquenne, was established to ensure and advocate for an inclusive workplace environment in which employees of all demographics and backgrounds are supported and heard. This committee actively promotes cultural awareness, embraces this diversity and celebrates this self-identity.
Our current EDI initiatives include
Increase awareness of inequality and bias through modules and speakers
Active involvement in organizations that celebrate diversity. Our faculty members are active participants in the San Diego Lung Ladies and Chancellor's Advisory Committee on the Status of Women (CSW), and our fellows are active participants in campus-wide Anti-Racism Task Force.
Continually evaluate and update the recruitment process. We recognize the importance of each applicant's pre-fellowship journey. We are taking a holistic review of applications to ensure an unbiased selection process and address the underrepresentation of gender and racial minorities in the division
Community involvement through clinical and research opportunities. Our PCCSM faculty and fellows provide care to the underserved population at free clinics in the city. Outside of San Diego, our division has also traveled across the border to assist providers at Tijuana General Hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic, becoming the forefront of this binational dialogue. Furthermore, our physician-scientists study pulmonary physiology and infections all across the world. Our mission is to provide service to individuals of all nationalities.
San Diego Lung Ladies
The San Diego Lung Ladies provides a forum for female physicians from Pulmonary Critical Care, Sleep, Pulmonary alone (including Pediatrics and Adult), and Thoracic Surgery to discuss manners to overcome some of the gender discrimination in our profession. Their quarterly social meetings is a great source for informal mentoring for some of our female fellows.
