Overview
The Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, Sleep Medicine and Physiology at the University of California San Diego has made efforts to provide education and training to groups ranging from pre-doctoral trainees to senior faculty members. As part of a world-renowned teaching hospital, we are committed to educating the next generation of physicians and post-doctoral scholars. Furthermore, our faculty members train upcoming leaders in pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine through our acclaimed UCSD PCCM Fellowship Program.Each fellowship is uniquely designed to maximize clinical training, procedural volume and research opportunities to enable physicians to design their individual career paths as they become academic pulmonologists. Clinical training at UC San Diego emphasizes fellow autonomy as a key learning tool in honing clinical acumen and sharpening decision-making.
Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Program
The Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Program is a three-year ACGME-accredited training program designed to train individuals to become outstanding skilled clinicians and accomplished scholars in academic pulmonary & critical care medicine. The PCCM Fellowship Program consists of approximately 18 fellows.
Interventional Pulmonogy Fellowship Program
The Interventioanl Pulmonology Fellowship Program is a one-year ACGME-accredited training program designed to train individuals to and provide comprehensive exposure to all aspects of advanced diagnostic, therapeutic, and palliative procedures in pulmonary medicine.

Lung Transplant Fellowship Program
The Lung Transplant Fellowship Program is a 1-year non-ACGME advanced training program for board-eligible pulmonologists. It provides immersive clinical, procedural, and research training to qualify fellows to become primary lung transplant physicians under United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) guidelines.LUNG TRANSPLANT FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM
Hospital Overview
As a tertiary referral center, physicians who train at UC San Diego care for many complex pulmonary conditions and a high volume of patients from around the country. Further, fellows work closely with our colleagues in multiple disciplines to provide seamless, multidisciplinary care to patients affected by pulmonary diseases.
Our clinical activities are located at three medical centers as well as outreach clinics:
- Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center located in La Jolla which has 93 inpatient beds including two cardiovascular ICU units, 4 cardiovascular ORs, 4 catheterization laboratories, and 2 electrophysiology labs in addition to non-invasive imaging laboratories and outpatient clinics. Attached to the Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center is the Jacobs Medical Center which has an additional 364 beds including ICU level of care and provides care for a variety of patients including those with cardiovascular disease.
- UC San Diego Medical Center located in Hillcrest which has 390 beds including a cardiac ICU and 2 catheterization laboratories.
- Veterans Affairs Medical Center, located in La Jolla which ha 296 beds including one cardiac ICU, two catheterization laboratories, and one electrophysiology laboratory.
