Admission Overview

Applications for the 2027-2028 season open in July 2026.

The program accepts six fellows each year and uses the National Residency Match Program (NRMP) via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). 

Program Overview

The Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Program at UC San Diego is a three-year ACGME-accredited training program designed to train individuals to become outstanding skilled clinicians and accomplished scholars in academic pulmonary & critical care medicine. The Match

Our program participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) in Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine. Our program reference number is 1049156F0.

Application Submission

We accept applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Instructions for completing and submitting the ERAS application can be found on the ERAS website. The ERAS 2025 fellowship application cycle opens on July 2025 for training starting on July 1, 2026. We will accept applications until October 2025. We strongly encourage applicants to apply as early as possible in the application process.

A note on ERAS Signaling: The UC San Diego PCCM Fellowship Program will be using ERAS signaling. The AAMC suggests that applicants signal programs they are genuinely most interested in, regardless of whether it's their home institution. Signals are just one part of the review process. We will review applications holistically and consider signals as one factor among many during the application review. We only use signals in decisions about interview invitations and not in subsequent aspects of the review process.

To be considered for a fellowship position, your application must include:
  • Completed ERAS common application
  • Personal statement
  • Medical school dean’s letter
  • medical school transcript
  • Minimum of 3 letters of recommendation (one of which is from your residency program director). If you have had prior research experience, a letter from your research supervisor is desirable.

Program Signaling

We will be participating in program signaling for the 2027 application cycle. While we will preferentially review applications from those who signal our program, we will also consider applicants who do not signal us.

Interviews

In alignment with the Association of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Program Directors (APCCMPD), our national professional society, to ensure an equitable interview process for all applicants, our fellowship interviews will be held exclusively virtually for the 2026 fellowship application cycle. We will not offer in-person site visits. Interview invitations are offered on a rolling basis during the application process. Interview dates offered to those selected applicants are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. The interview day will consist of a virtual visit with a Case Conference, a program overview, interviews, a tour, and multiple opportunities to meet with faculty and current fellows in the program. Interviews will be conducted between September and October.

Each interview session will take place over the course of one half day on Thursdays. Applicants will have several virtual interviews with our program (20 minutes each), an introductory presentation by the Program Director, and informal discussions via an optional virtual "happy hour" with our current fellows.
