Lung Transplant Fellowship Program

The UC San Diego Lung Transplant Fellowship is a one-year non-ACGME program dedicated to the training of outstanding lung transplant physicians. The UC San Diego Lung Transplant Program, led by Drs. Kamyar Afshar (Medical Director) and Eugene Golts (Surgical Director), is one of the highest quality programs in the nation based on Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR) ratings. Furthermore, UC San Diego was ranked number 10 by US News & World Report for “Pulmonary and Lung Surgery” for 2022-2023.

Program Description

Our program delivers high-quality, patient-centric care with an innovative approach that is efficient and equitable to all suitable candidates. Our fellowship provides trainees with exposures to a wide array of disease states and complex management plans. Trainees are integrated into a dedicated and compassionate group of professionals who provide comprehensive multidisciplinary care.

Our program provides trainees with extensive inpatient and outpatient experiences including, but not limited to:

  • Evaluation and candidate selection for heart-lung and lung transplantation, waitlist management of active candidates, peri-operative management, frequent bronchoscopies, interpretation of pulmonary function tests and labs related to allograft rejection/infections, ECMO as a bridge to lung transplantation, and management of post-transplant complications.
  • Trainees participate in quality improvement projects and available research activities.
  • Trainees receive continuing training in the principles of lung transplantation to be well experienced to serve as an independent transplant physician and meet the UNOS primary physician requirements
  • Trainees are closely mentored are receive in-depth clinical teaching, didactic instruction, and one-on-one training. Learning takes place in the clinic and bedside rounds, as guided self-study, and in journal clubs and weekly conferences.

Qualifications

To be considered for a fellowship position, the applicant is expected to:

  • Have DO, MD, or equivalent degree
  • Be ABIM board-certified/board-eligible in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Disease, and Critical Care Medicine with at least three years of ACGME training
  • Be eligible to practice medicine in California
  • Complete the application as below with 3 letters of recommendation

Application Submission

Applications are accepted from July 1st until March 31st, with interviews scheduled on a rolling basis during that interval. We strongly encourage applicants to apply as early as possible in the application process!

To be considered for a fellowship position, your application must include:

  • Letter of interest
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Minimum of 3 letters of recommendation from their training program director and colleagues who can attest to their qualifications
