UCSD Lung Explant Program

Exploring Immune Dynamics in COVID-19

The exact mechanisms through which lung damage and hypoxemia occur remain elusive. The UCSD Lung Explant Team is investigating mechanisms by which lung injury and fibrosis are occurring in COVID-19, and how these processes differ from other diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), Cystic Fibrosis (CF), Interstitial Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF), other forms of Pulmonary Fibrosis, and bacterial pneumonia. Our goal is to better understand how and why lung fibrosis, emphysema and cystic lung diseases occur such that we can identify potential therapeutic targets, that may also be applicable to other lung diseases.

Jisun_Chin.jpg
Jisun Chin
During his time as a coordinator for the lung explant project, Jisun has been able to develop his leadership skills as well as gain valuable clinical insights in preparation for his future medical career. Training new members of our explant team, has allowed him to expand upon his teaching skills within the clinical setting. In addition, due to his involvement in both tissue harvesting and downstream processing and experimentation, he has gained a more comprehensive perspective on how to carry out systems biology approaches using human tissue. As an aspiring physician scientist, this experience has played an important role in validating his motivations for pursuing translational medicine and has informed him on the pragmatic challenges of studying complex human diseases.

Samvel Gaboyan
Samvel is currently an undergraduate student at UC San Diego pursuing the pre-medicine track as aspiring physician with an interest in respiratory health. As part of the UCSD Lung Explant Program, he leads the tissue collection team and assists in processing lung samples. In this role, he has visualized numerous pathologies and has gained access to a unique collection of samples for novel research studies aimed at advancing respiratory health.
